About the Zoo
Positive experiences with nature combined with education and play, leads to conservation action. Through Quarters for Conservation, every guest and member directly contributes to supporting the conservation of threatened and endangered species and their wild habitats.
Exhibits
Happy Hollow exhibits are designed to provide safe and secure habitats, while giving as much space as possible for species specific behavior, such as running, jumping, climbing, resting, etc. Extensive research, thought and effort goes into making every habitat as varied and complex as possible to account for the individual needs of each animal. This includes providing areas where animals can go off exhibit or hide if they choose.
Training
Training is another form of enrichment. This animal management technique allows animals to receive the best care possible through their own willing involvement in the process. Training by positive reinforcement helps animals voluntarily participate in health checks, veterinary procedures and general housekeeping in their habitats. Each session provides mental and physical stimulation and challenges, and offers the opportunity to earn a reward.
Enrichment
Animal enrichment and training involve careful observation of each animal's behavior, including how it acts and reacts to different situations. With enrichment, keepers create stimulating habitats with opportunities for each animal to engage in natural behavior, be more active and have more control over its environment. Enrichment can include novel food items, scents, music, puzzle feeders and more.
Zoo on the hill
Located across from the Keep-Around Carousel is the Zoo on the Hill and Double-H Ranch, featuring a combination of animal exhibits, including giant anteaters and red ruffed lemurs, as well chickens and domesticated animals.

Zoo in the Hollow
Follow the crooked bamboo pathway down into the hollow and visit with some of the most amazing animals in the world. Where else in San José can you get up close to a stunning jaguar, lemur, meerkat or American alligator? Happy Hollow is dedicated to helping save species and preserve wildlife for future generations by participating in Species Survival Plan programs through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

More than 150 exotic, endangered and rescued ambassador animals reside at Happy Hollow to connect visitors to nature and inspire action to protect the natural world. The driving force of the zoo team is the care and protection of every animal ambassador, the preservation of their species and the conservation of the wild places where they exist. As an accredited Association of Zoos and Aquariums facility for more than 25 years, Happy Hollow remains at the forefront of evolving best practices and standards of animal management, welfare and care.
