Don’t Worry, Be Capy! Happy Hollow Park & Zoo Welcomes New Capybaras

October 26, 2022

Two one-year-old sister capybaras join the Zoo family

Happy Hollow Park & Zoo is excited to welcome two young female capybaras – the largest living rodents in the world. The pair of sisters were born at Abilene Zoo in Abeline, Texas on October 1, 2021, and were transferred to Happy Hollow earlier this month on the recommendation of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Capybara Species Survival Plan.

Although capybaras are not endangered, the Species Survival Plan serves the important role of coordinating the placement of individual members of the species at zoos and sanctuaries nationwide and ensuring that breeding activity supports the genetic health and long-term viability of the species.

“Capybaras are a critical part of the Amazon Rainforest ecosystem, an endangered habitat, and we hope to kindle a spirit of conservation in our guests by giving them the opportunity to observe these animals in person,” said Happy Hollow Zoo Manager Amber Rindy. “We know the public has been eagerly anticipating the return of capybaras to Happy Hollow,   and we are excited for our community to meet these new animals and learn about this unique species.”

Capybaras are known for a love of water in their native habitats in Central and South America; have webbed feet, unusual among mammals; and are cousins to domestic guinea pigs. When threatened, a capybara can stay underwater for up to five minutes to hide from predators.

While the capybara habitat in the Zoo in the Hollow was empty, the maintenance team made several renovations and upgrades to the space, such as repairing the platform and fencing, replacing several fence posts, and completely rebuilding the outdoor shelter.

The capybaras are adjusting well to their new habitat, enjoying regular swimming sessions in their pool and nibbling on the bamboo growing into the habitat. Visitors can catch a glimpse of these giant rodents during operating hours. Happy Hollow Park & Zoo is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Wednesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.
